Cal reaccionar.
Walter Benjamin had already warned us. In one of his best-known metaphors, the Angel of History, swept into the future by the winds blowing from Paradise, saw in front of him how "the heap of ruins rose up to heaven". In this image, ruins and destruction were the consequence of progress.
The photographic work I present here shows invaded landscapes, supplanted by the intrusions of this supposed progress. This process of invasion of the natural space by the artificially supervened generates, here, some unexpected reliefs, some "new tectonics" that are indicative of the imminent transformation of that natural landscape.
I have wanted to present these images with an air of unreality, with a whitish, nuclear light, and with an audio recorded from the public address system warnings in case of sudden eruptions at the summit of Mount Aso, in Japan. I want to emphasize that the danger is real.
The third landscape, according to Gilles Clemént, was that marginal space, abandoned and evolving at its own pace in the midst of urban debris. The fourth landscape, on the other hand, is encroachment and supplanting, and the 'new tectonics' would be the pustules symptomatic of systemic diseases.
Going back to Benjamin: we must not confuse technological progress with progress as humans. This confusion is one of the great lies that the system sells us (and that we too often buy). The fury of development, the fury of misunderstood progress, I mean, with the Angel's wings already full of lead, takes us rapidly towards the abyss. We need to react now.
